In today’s technological age, it is sometimes hard to remove yourself from a screen. Many use smartphones and computers all day at work, and find that they are spending 7+ hours looking at a screen each day. It’s not just adults either, modern parents are integrating videos and educational interactive games to occupy their children. Many feel that screen time is beneficial when used for an educational purpose. Although some studies show that extended screen time can adversely affect your child’s development. Fortunately, this emerging problem isn’t being ignored. Screen Free Week is celebrated April 29th to May 5th which makes for a great opportunity for families to plan activities together in an effort to create a more balanced lifestyle and develop a screen time plan for the future.

Everyone is encouraged to take advantage of Screen Free Week. With Spring in the air, it’s the perfect excuse to put down the phone and enjoy the great outdoors. Whether it’s making a point to take a walk outdoors a couple times during the week, or picking up a new hobby, you will likely see your mood, overall attitude, and health begin to change for the better. Here are some ideas for activities and hobbies to consider during Screen Free Week.

Take the Family To The Park

This is by far the easiest thing to do. Nearly anywhere you live, or within a short drive, will have a municipal or state park nearby with places to explore and trails to walk or hike. Getting out and exploring may lead to discovering places you didn’t know were in your area. Even most major cities have designated areas or parks meant to offer recreational space for citizens. At these parks there are many sports and activities available for you to participate in.

Fishing

Fishing is a fun and easy hobby that both adults and kids can enjoy. Although there are many different forms and difficulties of fishing, it doesn’t take much to stroll down to a local fishing hole and cast a line. The thrill of catching a fish becomes an addicting rush that many cannot get enough of. Just be sure to check local laws and seasons associated with certain bodies of water and permitted fishing zones. It may be necessary to purchase a fishing license also.

Sports

There are many adult leagues for basketball and other common sports that are easy to join. Recreational leagues can also be a great way to meet people and make new friends while also staying fit. If you want to try something completely different, there are many alternative sports that have had extreme growth in popularity over the last few years. Ultimate Frisbee and Frisbee Golf (Disc Golf) has become a hit among young people and can be seen being played in many urban parks. Pickleball has also become one of the fastest growing sports in America. Pickleball offers the fun of tennis without as much difficulty that novice racket sporters can enjoy.

Swimming/Water Sports

If you live where there is either a public pool, beach, or body of water, swimming is a great way to get some exercise and enjoy the outdoors. Just beware that it is not safe to swim everywhere, at all times though places with a lifeguard on duty are the safest. Activities like kayaking, canoeing, snorkeling, and surfing are not always easy hobbies to get into and can be dangerous, butcan be very exciting and allow you to explore the outdoors in a unique way.

If you haven’t made plans for Screen Free Week, you may be missing out on an opportunity to open yourself up to a healthier and happier lifestyle. You don’t have to shut electronics out of your life for good, in fact it is nearly impossible. However, making small changes can have a lasting impact!
