You have a movie coming out in February, “Crossing Over”. Tell us a little about your character, Yong Kim, and what his role is in the movie?
The movie is about immigration. My character’s name in the movie is Yong Kim. He’s this kid that immigrates here to Los Angeles and is having a really hard time adjusting to life in the us. To fit in he starts to hang with the wrong crowd and starts to make bad decisions.
The atmosphere on set must have been completely different from the set of Twilight. Was it hard to transition yourself from Erik to Yong? How did you prepare yourself for this role?
I actually shot “Crossing Over” before I had shot “Twilight”. Yes, the atmosphere was completely different on the respective sets. The the transition was not hard at all. I just took different types of preperation for each role because both characters are totally different.
What was it like working with such big actors like Harrison Ford, Ashley Judd, and Ray Liotta? Were you intimidated by them at all?
There are many different story lines in the movie so I do not come into contact with most of the other actors. My story line did intersect with Cliff Curtis who is best known as the father in “Whale Rider”. He was a pleasure to work with.
Were there any particularly scenes that were difficult to shoot? With a movie of such high intensity with a strong cultural message, I’d imagine there were aspects that were hard for some of the cast to work through?
There were many scenes that were hard to work through. I shot a lot of scenes and I don’t know how much of my part has actually made it into the movie. I would say almost all of my scenes were very challenging. It is a very heavy and dramatic film.
Do you have a few determining factors as to if you’ll audition for a role or are you pretty open to auditioning for anything if the script is good?
I am always open minded when it comes to auditioning for parts. I will always give every script a fair shot before making any decisions.
We hear that you prefer film to stage but would you consider doing stage if a director really wanted you for the role?
Yes, if the part interested me.
When filming movies, are you encouraged to stick directly to the script or are you able to do any improv?
It really depends on the director and the type of movie. Sometimes it’s just good to mix things up a little if just for the sake of staying fresh.
You’ve been in a multitude of films of all different genres. Do you prefer one genre over the other?
No I like all of them. There are great things about all different types of film genres and they make acting more enjoyable.
Tell us a little more about your shoe store, The Attic. How’d you get involved with that?
I wanted to create a place in Orange County and in San Diego that sold the type of clothing I like to wear. Its mostly street wear clothing. Before my store, this type of clothing was only easy to find in Los Angeles.
We’ve heard that you surf a lot, what do you do when you’re not working or surfing?
I play a lot of music. I make short films with friends and I just started getting into photography.
What career would you be pursuing if you were not an actor? Would you have found your foot in the music industry with as versatile as you?
I don’t think I’d like to make money off of music. I really don’t know what else I’d be doing.
Had you ever imagined that one character would give you so much exposure and gather you so many fans of all ages? How does this make you feel?
Never thought that a single film could do this for me and it feels great. I love “Twilight”. I love Eric and I love the fans!
