Find out which is the best Go Ape location in this comparison of every Go Ape ropes course in the world.  Compare all of the Go Ape rope bridges, Tarzan swings and crossings so that you can see which Go Ape locations will be best for your treetop adventure in the UK.

What is Go Ape?

Go Ape is the award winning tree top forest adventure where you can swing in the treetops and speed down thrilling zip wires.  Established in 2002, Go Ape is still growing UK-wide and you can also Go Ape in the US.

Go Ape has over 30 locations in the UK where they have tree-top high wires, tricky crossings (using ladders, walkways, bridges and tunnels made of wood, rope and super-strong wire) and wind-in-your-face zip wires.  Apart from Go Ape London, all of the locations are in natural settings of lush, green forest with a healthy dollop of breathtaking scenery.

The Go Ape experience gets the adrenaline pumping, gets people out of their comfort zones and above all it’s just great fun.

In this guide you can find out what Go Ape is like, use the Go Ape course comparison to see which are the best Go Ape locations, how to book, buy Go Ape gift vouchers and subscribe for Go Ape offers and deals.

How Long Does Go Ape Last?

How will I know what to do at Go Ape?

Young Girl on a Go Ape Zip Wire

When you turn up at Go Ape, you are provided with a climbing harness, and helped with fitting it. When everyone is ready for your session, your instructor shows you exactly how the safety system works. You get to try it for yourself at ground level. The instructor then takes you to the practice area, where a low level crossing and zip wire is demonstrated. Everyone gets to have a go and the instructor makes sure that you know how to attach yourself to the safety system and stay attached. After that, you head off on your own. Instructors walk around the entire course at ground level, so if you ever get stuck, all you have to do is shout for help and someone will be there within a minute.

Each of the Go Ape locations is split into 5 or 6 separate zones. Up in the canopy, there is an assortment of spectacular rope bridges and Tarzan swings. An exhilarating zip wire brings you back down to the forest floor at the end of every section, usually ending up with the bark chips from the landing zone going down your pants!

Go Ape is for anyone who likes to live life adventurously – you don’t have to be a seasoned explorer to have a Go Ape experience! There’s no greater thrill than the great outdoors, so whether your tribe is looking for stag do ideas, birthday party, corporate team building event or simply a day out with the kids, Go Ape make their courses as fun and as accessible as possible. Every Go Ape location has a cafe or restaurant so that you can get food and drink before or after your treetop experience. It is also useful for those who are just going to watch.

Which is the Best Go Ape Location?

Highest and best Go Ape location

To make things easy for you, here is my Go Ape course comparison that lists all of the Go Ape locations on one page so you can see which is the best. You can see stats like height, distance and number of zip wires.

How high is Go Ape?

The highest Go Ape course is at Glentrees and is 48 metres above ground at its highest point. Typically, Go Ape courses are about 12 metres high, but the highest Go Ape platform is 18m above ground at Go Ape in Grizedale Forest. This is my favourite place to Go Ape.

So, with over 29 Go Ape locations to choose from in the UK alone, which one is the best? It all depends on whether you want height, long zip wires, or challenging obstacles.

The best Go Ape location depends on what you are looking for:

  • Best Go Ape location for scenery – Grizedale;
  • Longest Go Ape zip line in the UK – Aberfoyle 420m;
  • Highest Go Ape rope crossing – Glentrees 48m;
  • Biggest Go Ape rope swing – Swinley Forest has a double rope swing;
  • Longest Go Ape course – Cannock Forest 1465m.

The difficulty of all the Go Ape courses is similar, as they are designed for you to be able to get across, albeit with some difficulty. But each Go Ape location has its own unique character.

Below is a list of all of the Go Ape courses in the UK, with key details of features that will help you to decide which is the best Go Ape location.

The Forestry Commission boasts some exciting facilities at Whinlatter Forest Park. With a well stocked cafe and bike shop, you can explore the Lake District forest on a Go Ape high wire adventure, and the Quercus or Altura mountain bike trails.

In 2007, The Forestry Commission welcomed the decision to give the go ahead to new mountain bike trails and a Go Ape high wire forest adventure course at Whinlatter near Keswick.

Planners at the Lake District National Park Authority gave the £500,000
project the all clear, and Graeme Prest, Forest Management Director for the Forestry Commission, said: “We’re delighted that these new facilities have been developed at Whinlatter.

Whinlatter Mountain Biking

Thousands of people who visit the Forest go mountain biking but up to now there has been no purpose built bike trail. This new trail is therefore a great opportunity for mountain bikers to develop their skills or simply go out and have fun.

Go Ape has been a huge hit at Grizedale Forest and we’re confident it will also be very popular with visitors to Whinlatter.

Mountain Bike Fun on the Whinlatter Altura Trail
The 19 kilometre bike trial isthe longest purpose built trail in the Lake District and involved building 15 kilometres of new single track trail. The trail was built by Hugh Clixby who has previously constructed trails for the Forestry Commission at Dalby in North Yorkshire and Cannock Forest in the West Midlands. It is sponsored by Altura, who make clothing for cyclists.

Bike hire facilities are provided at the Whinlatter trail centre by Cyclewise from Penrith, who also offer mountain bike training.

The North Face Trail, which opened at Grizedale Forest in 2006, has been a very big success story.

The Go Ape high wire forest adventure courses include rope bridges, tarzan swings and zip slides up to 40 feet up in the trees. Customers are fitted with a climbing harness, given instructions, and then trek from tree to tree high above the forest floor.

The new facilities opened in summer 2008 and led to the creation of 10 new jobs as well safeguarding 12 existing jobs. The North West Regional Development Agency helped to fund the construction of the mountain bike trail and redevelopment of the car park at the Visitor Centre.

Whinlatter Forest Park is England’s only true mountain forest. Rising to 790 metres above sea level it offers spectacular views of the Lake District and into Scotland.

The first half of the Altura Trail (North Loop) has been open since June 2008 and is used frequently. It is graded as a red route which means difficult. The second half (south loop) was opened on 1st Dec 2008.

The north loop of the Whinlatter mountain bike trail is 10km and the south is 9km, again classed as a red route.

There is now a Whinlatter Mountain Bike Trail route map – Altura and Quercus Triails.

The north loop is more technical than the south. It starts from behind the cycle shop in the main car park. The first stage consists of narrow single track going through the trees. As it begins to climb up the mountain, the trail remains narrow, with a steep drop to the side. Make sure you are paying attention when on your mountain bike on this section. There are a few very tight switchbacks before the Whinlatter Altura Mountain bike trail follows a wide forest trail futher up the mountain. Near the top, the Whinlatter Altura trail heads into the trees. This section is great, however you need to watch out for the tree roots. they do their best to get you off your mountain bike. The last section is a nice open swooping series of loops. You can get up some serious speed, but watch out for the switchbacks as some of them are quite sharp. When I was descending, the group behind me seemed to misjudge a sudden right hander as you go back into the trees. This turn has a very steep slope as it turns on a blind corner. The stream of profanities I heard indicated that they hadn’t expected it. The very end of the Whinlatter Mountain Bike Trail North Loop stops suddenly at the road at the entrance to the main car park. Beware of traffic, or as I experienced, someone had parked their car there. It was smothered in mud as previous mountain bike riders had obviously been caught unawares and skidded in the mud spraying it up the side of the car.

For a more sedate mountain bike trail, start on the Whinlatter mountain bike south loop. The south loop starts opposite the entrance to the main car park. Although there is some serious climbing up to the top of the mountain, the switchbacks are easier to turn, although you will need good balance. you will know when you are at the top. the first part of the descent is jagged rock and will be rebuilt. A lot of mountain bike riders have difficulty on the first 30 metres. the descent then goes on soem great windy single track. Once you have crossed the fire road, there is a boardwalk you can try (although I would avoid it in the wet as it doesn’t have any chicken wire on it). The next section consists of long swoopy curves. Once on another fire trail, watch out for the sharp exit over a rock bridge and into the trees. There are a couple of wooden bridges to cross towards the end.

Have fun on the Whinlatter mountain bike trails, but take care. There were some guys in the cycle shop hiring bikes who weren’t going to wear crash helmets. The guy behind the counter persuaded them that it was a good idea to wear a helmet as you only have one head. I saw several riders returning to the car park with grazes and cuts, so make sure you stay within your abilities. If you want some more difficult and varying trails, explore the Lake District for yourself, or get the book Lake District Mountain Biking – Essential Trails by Chris Gore and Richard Staton

At long last the highly successful high ropes adventure company Go Ape has secured a location in central London. Located in Battersea Park next to the River Thames, you can now experience the delight of swinging through the treetops and down exhilarating zip wires without having to leave the capital.
Londoners and businesses now have a fantastic opportunity to treat those they value with Go Ape Gift vouchers, or companies can join hundreds of other businesses by hosting their clients or team building days at a central London venue that will allow teams to think differently.
I ventured out to discover how Go Ape Battersea compares to the 30 other Go Ape sites located in forests across the UK and USA.

What is Go Ape?

Established in 2002, Go Ape offers up to three hours of tree top adventure. Go Ape takes one lush, green forest and a healthy dollop of breathtaking scenery; blend with a smattering of tree-top high wires, tricky crossings (using ladders, walkways, bridges and tunnels made of wood, rope and super-strong wire) and wind-in-your-face zip wires; and finish off with a liberal dose of people in search of their inner Tarzan.

Getting there

Go Ape Battersea is located in the South Eastern corner of Battersea Park. Battersea is renowned for its iconic power station (which is now being converted into luxury apartments) and of course the Battersea Dogs Home.
The car parking in Battersea Park costs about £2.59 per hour, so you are going to need to park for at least 2 hours if you want to complete the full Go Ape Battersea ropes course.

How Does Go Ape Battersea Compare to Other Go Ape Locations?

Firstly, and most importantly, Go Ape Battersea is the first Go Ape location in central London. They do have a Go Ape location at Trent Park near Cockfosters, but that is a bit of a trek by tube to get there from the city.
Just having an outdoor adventure activity of this sort in the city of London is a landmark move. This aligns with my philosophy of bringing the activities to the people rather than rely on the people trekking out into the countryside to find the activities.

Go Ape Battersea
Go Ape In Battersea Park is First in the City

Go Ape Battersea is perfect for getting teenagers, kids, big kids adults to be active outdoors. It is easy to get to, and is located right next to a great café. The pizza there is absolutely fabulous!
Since Go Ape Battersea is located in a smaller area than the usual forest, it has been quite cleverly designed as a series of three ascending loops. Each loop gets higher and progressively more challenging.
The Go Ape course has to use three huge upright poles as well as the trees to support the treetop ropes course. Unlike other ropes courses that use poles, Go Ape Battersea has tastefully used the trees and surroundings and looks great.
It towers above the children’s playground and crazy golf course.

Another unique feature of the Go Ape course in Battersea Park is the aerial bark pits at the end of the zip wires. In the forest Go Ape courses, your speed down the zip wire is slowed by ending in a big pile of bark chips. You often end up with your pants full of chippings. The end of the zip wires at Battersea are up in the trees, so they have cunningly designed big boxes of bark that are bolted firmly to the trees.
The safety system that is used at Go Ape Battersea is the same as the one used for the Go Ape Junior and also Up at the O2 where you walk over the top of it. Once you are attached, there is no way you can fall off. This means that all you have to think about is how to get across each obstacle.
Zip Wire Go Ape Battersea
So, what do I think? I think that Go Ape has triumphed yet again. This very tastefully designed treetop ropes course is a long awaited outdoor activity adventure that teenagers and adults in the city will love. It provides that access to physical activity, and introduces people to a way to move more whilst having serious fun.
If you like Go Ape Battersea, you will love Go Ape across the rest of the UK and US. If you like zip wires, you have to try the Go Ape Zip Trekking adventure at Grizedale Forest in the Lake District. And if you love Segways, well Go Ape provide those as well on off road all terrain Segways through the forests.

Interested? You can book now on the Go Ape website, or buy gift vouchers.

Even though London is a city, there are plenty of green spaces around for leisure and recreation. Up until now, if you wanted to experience the sheer pleasure of climbing trees, swinging into cargo nets and flying down zip wires on a Go Ape High Wire Adventure Course you would have had to travel out into the country to one of the Forestry Commission’s Forests around the UK.
